Stitching

Assemble Head

  • Turn head front (face) over. Line up turned over template against the center front seam and trace around.

  • This just puts the sewing lines on both sides of the head (not the fabric) so that you can assemble the head front and back.

  • Turn head back over. Line up turned over template against the center back seam and trace around.

  • Trim away all the fabric in the seam allowance where you back-tacked on the head front and head back seam.

    Head Trim

  • Note that I have trimmed away the seam allowances at the top of the head where the four pieces of fabric will join. This prevents bulk and there is no seam allowance to get caught in the seam causing a “glitch.”

  • Right sides together, match up center seams of head back and front. Pin around ears, leaving open at bottom. Hand baste close to the fabric edge first to make it easier.

  • Hand basting the seam is easier than pulling out the pins as you sew.

    Pin Head

  • Stitch slowly and carefully following the stitching line of the head and ears, leave open at the neck.

  • When stitching the area between the ears and the side head, stitch to a “V” rather than a “U”.

  • When trimming the head seams, snip the areas between the ears and the head almost to the stitching and dab a tiny bit of Grrrip on seam rubbing it in and off so not to stiffen the fabric, it will protect and strengthen the seam.

  • Trim closely at front of face and back of head.

    • Trim around the ears, snipping the “V” seam between the ears and the side head almost to the seam at the “V”.

    • Leave full seam allowance at the chin, but trim at an angle. See photos.

      Trim Head

  • Trim seam in half.

  • Turn the ears one at a time, by inserting the jaws of a small hemostat (medical clamp used in surgery). Grasp the ear and gently pull out into the head.

  • Turn the head right side out. The ears should be sticking out like two open car doors.
