Sometimes when you are attempting to reach a site, you will get an error message. For some of the most common error messages, we have listed a number of possbile causes (most likely first) and suggestions as how to procede. If you get an error message that is not listed here, please send us an e-mail at |
The most common reasons for this error are:
The page is obsolete and has been removed, or the page has been moved and the link has not been updated.
This is usually indicated by clicking on a link (as opposed to typing in the URL). There is nothing you can do about this.
The page is dynamically generated.
You can recognize this by a bunch of numbers or special characters, or ".cgi" in the Universal Resource Locator (URL) that gives the page's address. Remove information from the end of the URL until you reach a slash (/) and try again. This may lead you to a previous page from which you can get to what you want. If that doesn't work, remove from the end to the next slash and try again.
The page has been moved to another location after you (or whoever gave you the URL) noted down its location.
There's not much you can do about this, but you might try removing information from the end of the URL to the next slash and looking again.
You have mistaken an underscore ( _ ) for a space.
Try replacing spaces with underscore ( _ ) characters and look again.
You have mistaken a tildé (~) for a dash.
This only occurs in the first character of an account name. For example: "http://www.mimidolls.com/~jim" indicates the file "index.htm" (implied) in the account of "jim" on host "www" at domain "mimidolls.com".
You have the wrong URL
Try making obvious corrections such as spelling, capitalization, etc.
The most common reasons for this error are:
You have dropped your connection to your Internet Service Provider.
Check to see if the modem has hung up the telephone line.
Your ISP is having a temporary problem.
Try again, particularly if this a URL that you have used successfully before.

Your ISP is disconnected from the Internet.
